Why would ants paused when meeting with other ants?

Why ants would pause if met / met with other ants?. Ants that look "pitted head" when meeting it is actually being communicated. T.C. Schneirla, a researcher at New York University, had conducted experiments with ants. He took an ant and then put in place of food. Another ant put in place that contains enemy ants. Then the second ant behavior is observed especially when met with his friends on the street.

From that research, Schneirla concluded that chemicals released from food or from enemy ants ants stick to it. When meeting with his ants, the ants would greet each other (touching). Well, here's to greet each of the chemicals the ants will tell her (via antenna on the head ant) whether there is food in the surrounding environment or enemy.
